By: Patient Email Withheld, Sandy Utah, UT
Need Dentist / Specialist: No
Provide Cost Estimate: No
X-rays Available: Yes
Case Summary
Broken Tooth
Teeth:
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: less than 6 mo.
Last Cleaning: less than 6 mo.
Case Description
I am recently very satisfied with my general dentist. However during a recent visit he suggested replacing a bond I have on a front tooth and the other next to it that has a a hirline crack through it (child hood accident) with crowns instead of veneers. This seemed so extreme since I have such great healthy teeth. Though The tooth that is bonded is turning darker and won't bleach I am sure a second opinion is worth looking at. Do you advise this?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Does your dentist know you're concerned about a veneer vs.a crown? The fee is about the same, the procedure is about the same as far as time invovled, so there is really no financial incentive to recommend one over the other. I would let your dentist know you're concerned. If he/she can't give you a reasonable answer, they would probably welcome a second opinion. Good Luck.
